The Caribbean Potcake

A Potcake is a mix-breed dog found on Caribbean Islands. The name comes from a traditional local dish of seasoned rice and pigeon peas, overcooked rice that sticks to the bottom of the cooking pot, forming the 'pot cake', is commonly mixed with other leftovers and fed to the dogs. Potcakes dogs generally have smooth coats, cocked ears, and long faces. They are intelligent, loyal, calm, and resilient. Unlike many dog breeds, Potcakes are able to eat many foods that would be upsetting to most dogs. Their stomachs are incredibly hardy, and their souls are free and tend to wander and dislike confined yards.

There are hundreds of thousands sick and stray Potcake across the Caribbean. Sadly, on some island’s officials consider the dogs nuisances and will shoot and poison them. On some islands governments have policies in place to protect animals however they don’t have the resources to enforce or manage these laws, meaning cruelty acts occur including poisoning, chaining and leaving them without food or water. The Caribbean has a long way to go in educating and providing appropriate animal health resources for people and their animals.

Together we can change the life for all Caribbean Potcakes by providing them love, parasite treatments, vaccinations and spay and neuter clinics.
