Caribbean Islands
Bequia
The Caribbean suffers from animal cruelty, abandonment and neglect. Island dogs suffer from untreated preventable diseases. St Vincent and the Grenadines located in the Eastern Caribbean endures significant lack of resources for animal health care. It was here where my heart struck a chord and Sailing Paws Rescue was born.
Bequia, an island that is a very popular amongst cruisers but is a very sad place for an unwanted or stray dog. Outreach is a critical part of rescue work involving walking the island, feeding, administering parasite treatments, rescue operations, and organising spay and neuter clinics.
Sailing Paws work in collaboration with local rescue groups Bequia Animal Protection Alliance and The Chappy House.
Mayreau
Mayreau is a beautiful remote tropical island however when you walk beyond the water's edge and beaches you will find dogs chained and left without food or water. Due to poor education, poverty and lack of empathy for dogs. Some believe dogs should not enter the house and need to stay chained to protect unwanted intruders. There are no veterinarians or over the counter parasite treatments available in the Grenadines.
Outreach here is a crucial providing animal welfare checks, parasite treatments and lots of pats and cuddles.
Mayreau Animal Welfare run a volunteering program, providing accomodation for vets and nurses to volunteer their time on the island. If you are a vet or vet nurse and interesting in volunteering please contact us.
St Vincent
St Vincent, the main land of St Vincent and the Grenadines and home to many struggles including poverty, corruption, climate change, natural disasters, volcano eruptions and animal neglect. Part of the culture here is that dogs are to sleep outside and protect the house. Sadly in some case can be chained up without water or food. General parasite treatments are extremely expensive making it nearly impossible for families to provide these treatments for their pets. Change is possible though!
Zico and Frankie have mooring ball business at Keartons Bay. Frankie jumped on board with his fluffy friend to receive flea and tick treatment. Frankie loves his dogs and even lets this little one sleep inside.
Union Island
Dogs on Union Island struggle just as much as the others. Local poverty and the never ending battle of starvation, neglect and unwanted puppies.
Salty Paws Animal Rescue and Clinic run a small spay and neuter clinics with visiting qualified overseas vets volunteering their time and skills. The volunteer rescue centre raise awareness of the importance of treating animals kindly and how to take proper care of them as well as explain why Spaying and Neutering is necessary.
The small isolated island, with a population of less than 3000 people and lots of stray cats & dogs. There are no full-time veterinarians on island making it very difficult to care for the animals and to control the unwanted overpopulation.
Grenada
Grenada is a small yet bustling island known as The Spice of the Caribbean. But sadly also known for horrific cruelty acts and baiting dogs with deadly poisoning.
Grenada are lucky enough to have a Veterinary University, great vaccination programs, qualified veterinary centres and a successful rescue shelter.
Donating your time to walk shelter dogs, bottle feed dumped newborns, fostering and adopting potcakes at GSPCA is a great way to help out when visiting this island.
Carriacou
Cariacou is a small island off Grenada with less resources and thousands of stray, sick and unwanted dogs. Baiting and poisoning dogs is common here by locals, farmers and authorities. This has to stop!
Carriacou Animal Hospital is run purely by volunteers and donations. Locals and visitors are encouraged to have their animals seen here for spays, neuters and medical treatments, on a donation payments system. Overseas veterinarians offer their time to provide these services.
Irates of the Caribbean are an anonymous group of crusaders who are seeking to bring an end to the indiscriminate and barbaric poisoning of dogs on the tiny idyllic Caribbean island of Carriacou.
Dominica
Dominica is the best kept secret of the Caribbean, the island is picturesque and known as The Nature Island.
The island is raw and special. After arriving in the Caribbean, Dominica was one of the first island I encountered a baby Potcake. Well not just one three baby Potcakes on the beach in Portsmouth, covered in fleas and ticks just wanting pats and full bellies.
Sadly their mum was recently poisoned by a goat farmer. A local family were trying their best to care for them. Sailing Paws assisted with food, a shampoo day, parasite treatments. A month later we popped back in and found them happy and a little bigger ready for another pamper day.
